Constant Readers,
At yesterday's Rules Committee hearing, members (Daly, Dufty, Peskin) considered four candidates proposed by Mistermayor for the seven-person Historic Preservation Commission. (The Mayor appoints all members, who have to be confirmed by the Board.) Only two could attend the meeting: Karl Hasz (seat 6 - contractor) and Alan Martinez (seat 1 - architect). Several people vouched for the candidates, both of whom were approved. The committee is set to meet again on Monday of next week to consider the other two candidates: Sue Lee (seat 4 - historian) and Tammy Chan (seat 7 - at-large).
NOTE TO SUE LEE: Bring lots of friends. Even though she wasn't present, four people spoke against Lee's nomination. They accused her of not having passion for preservation, of coming out against Proposition J (whose passage in November created the commission), and of being more interested in economic development than preservation.
You can watch the comments for yourself.
Speakers: (1) Stewart Morton - San Franciscans for Preservation Planning; (2) Dennis Richards - San Francisco Heritage, Duboce Triangle Neighborhood Association; (3) Judith Hoyem - Eureka Valley Neighborhood Association, Friends of 1800; and (4) Bill Sugaya - Planning Commission.
Now, I don't pretend to know what it takes to be a historian on a historical commission or who is best or this job - all I'm saying is: if Sue Lee wants this seat, it would help to have some supporters at the next meeting. And a damn good explanation for whether and why she opposed Prop J.

The final speaker is current Planning Commissioner, Hisashi Sugaya. You must have confused his first name with another current commissioner named Bill Lee.

@DJTennessee - LOL! Obviously, it's a slow news day!
@mschool - Hisashi Sugaya goes by "Bill". No, I don't know why. Thanks for pointing out that it's not his real name!
