The Emotional Rollercoaster of JROTC...

Last night Board of Education meeting was a doosie!  I mean, wow! I tuned in at about 7:30 just in time to see Kim-Shree Maufas tell the pro-JROTC folks that they'd have the same amount of time to speak as the anti-JROTC folks (who had already spoken) for a total of 22 minutes. Some students who showed up (in droves) to support JROTC were upset because there were way more of them than 22 minutes would allow.

Rev. Amos Brown got up to speak in defense of the disenfranchised pro-JROTC students and damn near made it so none of them got a chance to speak! So, I watched as Maufas stopped the meeting (she's a really nice woman but she doesn't take any shit) and the screen went to SFGTV screensaver. But the audio kept going in and out so what comes through are hilarious snippets from the ruckus that you can't see. Here's the video - remember, keep listening after the meeting stops.

Okay, so the pro-JROTC kids come in and speak and everything goes smoothly.  I certainly didn't have the heart to tell them that every member of the Board already had their mind made up, but they were cute anyway.

Each of the Board members spoke for about 5 minutes but it felt like 50. Several Commissioners decided to walk everyone through their emotional journey on this issue like we were in group therapy and they were holding the special "sharing" Koosh ball.

Actually, the two most sensible speakers were the two student representatives who sit on the Board.

After dicking around with the P.E. issue which they ultimately decided to deal with later (more on that tomorrow) the Board members added two amendments to the resolution: (1) Norman Yee put in a provision that any school with less than 50 JROTC participants can choose to opt out of the program (Fewer later said that there were two schools this would apply to now), and (2) Jane Kim put in a provision asking that the JROTC folks actively oppose the "don't ask, don't tell" policy of the U.S. military.  Then the vote: (Both Student Reps voted yes) Yes - Mendoza, Norton, Wynns, Yee; No - Fewer, Kim, and Maufas

Everyone claps and leaves because it's late. Like 10:30 p.m.

Except that later in the meeting, the issue of whether to layoff JROTC instructors came before the Board on a totally unrelated matter. Board members, unsure of what the enrollment would be for next year's programs (partly because of the P.E. credit issue, partly because of the 50-student opt-out) decided to go ahead and issue layoff notices to JROTC instructors - because they had to by May 15 - that they can rescind next month once they have resolved the numbers issue. 

Commissioner Rachel Norton wasn't letting it go without a fight, saying:

I just can't even believe that we're seriously discussing this. I mean, I really cannot believe that we're seriously discussing this. I mean, we just voted to reinstate this program. And -- and it seems nothing short of mean-spirited to turn around on the same night and vote to issue layoff notices to all the instructors on the program that we just voted to reinstate. I mean, I really cannot believe we're even considering this.

Nevertheless, the vote to send out layoff notices now and ask questions later went down like this: (Student Rep. voted no) Yes - Fewer, Kim, Maufas, Mendoza, Yee; No - Norton, Wynns

To recap: the Board approved JROTC programs and laid-off instructors. It was quite a night.

It's pretty clear that some board members are putting their own political agenda ahead of what the city wants and what's good for the kids. It's also kinda cynical to see people who claim to be about "empowerment" taking every chance they can to tell people that they're not welcome and that free speech only applies to "progressives."

Personally, I'm proud to have worked for these folks, and glad that our Facebook app won a "Pollie". I don't care if that upsets the sensitive souls who want to dictate everyone's lives to them....the voters spoke, but the progressives won't listen!

Who is Ed Lee & how did he get poised to be the most powerful man in S.F., in charge of millions of dollars & will have contractors salivating at his feet ?
