Secretive right up until the last minute, state Attorney General Jerry Brown’s Web site on Monday claimed he was going to make a "special announcement" Tuesday. Really. As if it would be about anything but the governor’s race. Part of me hoped he would get up and say, "Ladies and gentlemen, I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico." Or, "My fellow Californians, we have found Carmen Sandiego!" It was, of course, his announcement that’s he’s running for governor. (Sigh.) I hope his strategy gets better from here.
- For the 753rd Board of Supes meeting in a row, Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi gave his speech about how we absolutely must know how much money is spent on security for elected officials. (Gavin's law, as some folks call it.) The board voted to put the measure on the June 8 ballot. An idea for the November ballot? Mandatory disclosure of the amount paid to Legislative Chamber security officers who have to stand around while Mirkarimi pontificates week after week on this subject.
- Quote of the meeting
"This guy is out of control — Chief Gascón. He does not believe that he is accountable to the Police Commission, he thinks that legislators should not do his job ... [that] we shouldn’t talk about how the chief of police should run his department in terms of staffing patterns or what not. He is a loose cannon out on his own ... [and] I think it’s about time that we talk to Chief Gascón about San Francisco values and say, ‘If you want to honor and respect San Francisco values, there’s a place for you here. And if you don’t, find the next job somewhere else.’"
— Local loose-cannon expert Supervisor Chris Daly, at Tuesday’s Board of Supervisors meeting. A friend immediately proposed a way to balance the city budget: "a Daly-Gascón death match. How much would you pay?" I offered up my VHS collection and a kidney.
Website Bonus:
Below is the unedited section of Daly's statement about the chief (You can read the full statement in which Daly calls out the Chief for falsely stating that his office reached out to Daly, here.)
This guy colleagues - to my progressive colleagues - this guy is out of control - Chief Gascon. He does not believe that he is accountable to the Police Commission, he thinks that legislators should not do his job (this is his comments on the foot patrol legislation) that we shouldn't talk about how the chief of police should run his department in terms of staffing patterns or what not; that we shouldn't do his job. But if we propose legislation (and writing legislation and passing legislation is our job) he's at that podium quick as kodak telling us how to do our job. That is a double standard. He doesn't respect his own commissioners. He is a loose cannon out on his own, he is lying and perjuring himself in the press and I think that he needs to be held accountable and we need to stand up. We need to stand up to George Gascon and his Los Angeles or maybe it's Mesa, Arizona, but it ain't San Francisco values that he is here pushing [after] less than a year of living in the city and county of San Francisco. I think it's about time that we talk to chief Gascon about San Francisco values and say, "If you want to honor and respect San Francisco values, there's a place you here and if you don't, find the next job somewhere else."

Dewar beat me to it. If Jerry Brown found Carmen Sandiego, ideally while wearing a bright red fedora, I'd quit my job and join his campaign.
Also, Chief Gascon should issue a press release saying, "Hi Kettle."

Dear Sweetie Melissa Griffin whose gorgeousity is an unstoppable force to be reckoned with,
Two observations about Jerry Brown's pathetic youtube announcement:
1.) He did it in front of a brick wall. WTF!?
2.) The shifting camera movements were blatantly unnecessary and disheartening proof that he will rely on gimmicks to get elected rather than substance. Anybody who feels the need to do this sort of thing is clearly not worthy of being elected fly swatter.

The vindictiveness of Supervisor Chris Daly of District Fairfeild is truly amazing. San Francisco finally has a top professional Police Chief who Daly cannot intimidate. Chief George Gascón is cleaning up the city including the district Daly represents and endeavors to keep a sanctuary for the homeless, drug pushers, drug users and petty thugs. So, naturally Daly is attempting to eliminate his position and the Police Department. At the Board of Supervisors meeting Daly ranted on about Gascón and what he, Daly, calls “San Francisco values.” The values Daly talks about are values of an extreme element on the far left, not the average San Francisco resident. Average San Franciscans value safe, clean, unobstructed sidewalks and streets, good schools, well maintained playgrounds, parks, libraries, etc,. and public officials who consider the productive taxpaying residents and businesses when making public policy.
